The tiny plastic balls

The tiny plastic balls in body wash that exfoliate your skin actually contain toxins. And they're not just in body washes -- they're also found in many shampoos and toothpastes. These plastic balls, called microbeads, are too small to be filtered by water treatment plants and end up in our water supply. Once in our rivers and lakes, the plastic balls are eaten by fish -- and eventually make their way into our own food supply.
Scientists say tens of millions of plastic beads have already been detected in our lakes and off our coasts. Already-fragile fish populations on Long Island and in the Great Lakes are put at greater risk with the presence of these chemicals. When fish ingest the microbeads, they harm their intestines which can lead to death.
The State Senate is discussing common-sense legislation that would require manufacturers of personal care products to stop manufacturing, distributing and selling products containing microbeads by 2016.
